Happy New Year, Jewesses! Here’s something exciting to kick off the new year: It’s the first TV show about Jewish women’s issues, and it’s on The Jewish Channel! “The Salon” is hosted by Forward editor Jane Eisner, with Mediaite.com editor Rachel Sklar, and brings together women from across the spectrum of Jewish life for some straight talk about the things affecting us Jewesses.
The current episode, highlighted in the above promo, features Hadassah president Nancy Falchuk, comedian Judy Gold, and filmmaker Lacey Schwartz dishing on topics including the arrest of the woman for wearing a prayer shawl at the Western wall, the Mideast breast cancer conference controversy, the return of Sarah Palin, Israeli supermodels’ impact on how Jewish women are viewed, and the new crop of “Jewish” dolls for little girls.
On a personal note, as one of the producers of “The Salon,” the best part of the show is hearing what these distinguished, accomplished women have to say about everyday kinds of concerns that women have. Like Ruth Messinger of the American Jewish World Service, a previous guest, talking about trying to get her son to wear his winter coat (”I thought I’d be arrested for child abuse struggling the coat back on him”), or Nancy Falchuk, in the clip above, noting that when she was a young woman people said Jewish women were loose — to the utter shock of the younger women on the panel.
I hope you’ll have chance to watch the entire show on The Jewish Channel, and to let us know what you think! Ideas and topic suggestions are welcome — just email email@example.com.
